As much as I enjoy trying to play soccer (or football as some people call it) in a condensed form on my iPhone, it’s hard to not to wish for something more… portable. Portable as in easy to play and not time consuming.

Fortunately enough, there is such a game, and it’s called Flick Kick Football. It is a simple game that has you “flicking” the ball past collapsible defenses and sometimes even a goalie that is on a fixed path. The flick mechanic is what you would expect, just flick the ball in the motion that you would like it to travel. If you flick forward, the ball will go forward, but if you flick a curved path, the ball will launch with some hefty english.

There are two modes to play through, a timed mode that has you score as many goals as possible in a limited time and an arcade mode that lets you take all the time that you would like. Unlike the timed mode, the arcade mode is based on lives, with you losing a life when you miss a shot. Since you don’t start with any lives, it’s important to gain them by kicking the ball into the sweet spots that are by poles.

The graphics, style, and sound effects are all superb, leaning towards a comic book style rather than a realistic football one. The way the cutout defenders move and fall when struck, as well as the excitement of each and every goal just makes me want to come back for a few more games. Factor in the worldwide online leaderboards and Open Feint achievements and you have a game that’s very difficult to put down.

Pick up Flick Kick Football for $0.99 and bend it like Beckham or something.
