Shakespeare once asked "What's in a name?" We'll pretend for the purposes of this review that he'd now answer "Quite a lot, really." This is why when anyone scans through the App Store, they might be a little underwhelmed by any title featuring the word 'farting.' That's a shame in the case of Farting Felix, as it really doesn't deserve to be overlooked. While the name might suggest something pretty shallow and juvenile, Farting Felix actually offers a surprising amount of variety and entertainment.
The game is essentially four titles in one. Spread across four different worlds, each of these locations offers a different kind of experience. Early on, Farting Felix is an auto-runner in which Felix must flee from a monster by collecting mushrooms and using them to fart his way across the scenery. Sure it's a bit crude, but it's an effective way of adding thrust mechanics to the game. Collect enough mushrooms and it's possible to activate a special power such as a ghost form, enabling Felix to float through everything in sight. Special powers change depending on which part of the world one's in, which is a neat touch.
The second world consists of a side scrolling shoot-em-up with taps on the screen firing bullets or flinging mines at the enemies around Felix. Following that are platforming stages and puzzle-based levels. In each case, Farting Felix is quite entertaining to play. It's pleasant enough and simple to get to grips with.
New worlds are unlocked through completing missions such as using special power-ups, and that works well in providing extra impetus to keep playing. The amount of variety within Farting Felix also really helps, meaning it's much more interesting than just a conventional auto-runner. For $1.99, it's quite a good price for so much content. Variety really is the spice of life.
