As a major fan of role-playing games (RPGs), I was really looking forward to the release of Duck Life for my iPhone - and thankfully that excitement was warranted, because frankly, this game rocks!
In Duck Life, players are tasked with turning an average everyday duck into a racing superstar. This is done through feeding the duck food, training him (through extremely fun mini-games) and ensuring that he's constantly in good health.
Some RPG games can be a bit overwhelming for new players, but Duck Life manages to not be intimidating for newcomers and still has enough depth to keep the more experienced RPG gamers interested. To upgrade the duck's abilities, players need to train it through the mini-games. These mini-games are incredibly fun, and the ducks get a lot faster quickly via the fun and addictive nature of the activities.
Players may find that the controls for certain mini-games to quite fidgety. Duck Life opts to use on-screen buttons that are cramped in the bottom left-hand corner at times. These are very small buttons and I often found myself pressing the right arrow when my intention was to press the left.
Duck Life's main attraction is the fact that there is so much to do in-game. Players can opt to train their duck through mini-games, put their duck's abilities to the test by racing them or purchase some new gear for their duck. Players can choose from lots of different options in the shop, ranging from a new hat for their duck to purchasing an egg that will hatch into an all new duck altogether.
Duck Life is without a doubt an incredibly well done RPG, even if the subject matter is atypical for the genre. It strikes the perfect balance between approachability and depth, making it an incredibly good choice for any RPG fan to have in their repertoire.
