Are You A Dodo? Review

Never underestimate the power of the mini-game. They might be simple and often take seconds to complete, but they can be great at getting their hooks into one's attention span. Are You A Dodo? is that kind of game. It's incredibly simple to play, but I found myself coming back for more every now and then, just to see if I could beat my previous high score.

Are You A Dodo? offers up nine different mini-games covering logic, dexterity, and memory skills. Often these mini-games are fairly similar. For one thing, there are a few that are essentially variations on pairing up matching icons. These are mixed up slightly, such as one that requires matching a silhouette of an image to the colored image, but it's a similar concept.

Elsewhere are games that test one's mathematical abilities. One such puzzle might involve adding up cubes quickly, which is simple enough but when up against a timer it's a tad more tricky. Another game involves adding up numbers on dice quickly. Annoyingly, this game isn't incredibly well explained - at least not initially. Ghostly-looking dice mean the number must be subtracted, but this pertinent information is hidden away within the pause menu, which is a little frustrating initially.

As a freemium game, the acquisition of coins dictate how often power-ups can be used, as well as how often picking games randomly can occur, but it never feels too severe. A flurry of adverts can grate at times, though.

Despite such occasional issues, Are You A Dodo? is mostly just solid fun. At the end of each session a score is provided and placed against a form of experience bar, giving one the heads up of what kind of creature they represent. It's nothing significant but having a target to aim for is always welcoming.

Are You A Dodo? keeps it instinctive rather than genuinely educating, but that's fine for scratching a slight cerebral itch.
