Diskobolos is a little bit like Bust-A-Move meets Space Invaders. It’s a fast-paced arcade game where a constant barrage of electronic insects are descending down the screen while the player shoots bouncing disks to clear them out before they can reach the bottom.

It’s all about the pursuit of the high score, even as the baddies increase in number and come faster than ever. There are a number of tricks to master, from bouncing the disk off multiple walls to getting it caught in black holes that open on the play field, that can help raise the multiplier and get higher combo scores. Even as the field changes and new obstacles arise, there are tricks players can use to get even higher scores, adding to the overall variety that keeps Diskobolos interesting.

Adding to the depth are the many missions and perks that can be unlocked. Missions are special tricks or challenges the player can choose to attempt in order to unlock better perks and increase their rank. For example, one mission might be to merely survive for an entire minute while another tasks the player with shooting their own disk 3 times in one round. The missions increase in difficulty as the player completes them, but the rewards are worth it.

Some of the perks include an aim assist, the ability to slow the speed of the disk as it bounces or fill the item gauge faster. Some perks can be seen as a big help to the player as they are playing the game. Others actually increase the challenge but help boost the score dramatically. Again, it’s all about getting the highest score and becoming the number one Diskobolos player.

Diskobolos seems like a fairly straightforward game, but the number of cool tricks and perks help add enough depth to keep it from being the same thing, over and over again. The increasing challenge and overall difficulty take Diskobolos from a simple, casual game to a hardcore frenzy in only a few moments. There’s also the addictive quality to the game that keeps players coming back to try again, always seeking out that elusive top score. It’s a tough game, but a lot of fun.
