Devious Dungeon 2 is a game that starts well and only gets better over time. It’s the ideal kind of title for mobile gaming, given that it’s simple to pick up and play yet still feels like you’ve achieved something. It’s occasionally a little simplistic but you can’t begrudge it too much when it’s this fun.
You pick an adventurer, based on one of three classes, before taking it through a series of randomized levels. Each level is laid out like a platformer with your primary aim being to find a key to unlock the portal to the next stage. Virtual buttons form the controls with one button for jumping and interacting with objects, while the other performs an attack move. There’s a little more depth in the form of being able to perform a kind of sliding dodge move too, but none of this takes much effort to learn.
Each level only takes a few minutes to fully explore, but there’s a plentiful supply of them so Devious Dungeon 2 feels far from short. There’s also a certain amount of grinding involved as when you’re eventually defeated, you’re restored to your village with all the experience and coins you’d previously gained. Attrition helps a lot here but Devious Dungeon 2’s randomized nature means it never feels tedious.
Those coins can be used to buy new weapons and armor, which make all the difference, as well as potions for health benefits. You can buy a coin doubler to speed things along, but it’s far from essential. There’s a steady stream of quests and mini-bosses which also reward you and are fun to work towards.
"Fun" being the operative word for Devious Dungeon 2 as it really is excellent fun. It’s so simple, but you’ll find yourself itching to come back for more, working your way through the castles and watching as you get stronger and stronger.
