ChickenBreak is an endless running game where players take control of a chicken and guide it in an attempt to escape from the maximum security prison where it is being held captive. Here, the phrase “maximum security” is no joke either. Falling bombs, homing missiles, traps, pits, swinging saws, giant spiked balls, and so many other dangers all wait to stop the chicken from escaping. It’s up to the player to help the chicken jump, duck, slide, bat away and otherwise avoid all these contraptions, and they do so with the help of some inventive controls.

In ChickenBreak, unlike many other endless running games, there are no fixed buttons on the screen, and yet the chicken must execute various different actions to avoid obstacles. This isn’t the kind of game where all that is needed to advance is a series of well timed jumps. In order to allow the player to control the chicken in many different ways while keeping the screen clear of a jumble of buttons, the developer presents the player with adaptive controls for some actions such as jumping and sliding that will only appear when needed. There are also tapping and swiping actions that the player can use, for example to collect coins and power ups or to repel homing missiles.

Coins are used to upgrade the chicken’s abilities and make it easier for him to last longer, and the upgrade system rewards players for playing more. The chicken and its many adversaries are all very well animated; expressive and interesting. The gameplay is fast-paced and challenging but well balanced by power ups and upgrades that allow the player to reach new levels. While there are many of these type of games in the App Store, it’s refreshing to find one that takes a slightly different approach to controls and tries some unique mechanics instead of just mimicking what’s been done before.
