Breakdown Buddy is a simple yet useful idea for those of us stranded on the road. Unfortunately, even despite keeping it simple, it still misses out on a few important things that means it’s never more than a nice idea.
It’s an app that allows you to store important information in case of your vehicle breaking down, as well as providing you with your exact location in case you’re not sure where you’re stranded.
The location side of things works very well. There’s a simple screen where you hit Get My Location and it does exactly that. Of course the stock Maps app does that too, but at least it’s consolidating everything you need. Elsewhere is the Breakdown details section of the app, offering you a place to enter information such as your breakdown service’s phone number, your car registration plate, your phone number, and insurance details. There’s a notes section too, for anything else that you might need to know.
There are a few issues here, though. For one, you could store this information elsewhere easily enough via the Contacts app or just through a note. More importantly, you can’t easily dial out from Breakdown Buddy. Instead, you have to edit the details in order to copy and paste the number elsewhere. That’s really not very convenient for an app that aims to make things simpler for those stuck with a broken down vehicle.
Breakdown Buddy is a good idea and one that looks promising in theory, but in practice it’s not all that helpful. With features that can be easily replicated through stock apps and lacking user friendly tools elsewhere, it’s tough to recommend.
