Battle Fortress is a simple, addictive shooter that can quickly go from easy to challenging in a span of a few levels. The story goes like this: a lone space samurai challenges the Shogun Youhatsu and his armada of battle fortresses. Players take control of a star-fighter and seek to avenge the destruction of the samurai’s master.

Battlefortress offers up an old school look and certainly matches that with its gameplay. Players will go through endless levels as they seek to destroy well-protected fortresses while dodging enemy fire. The gameplay is incredibly simple, though some may take slight issue with the control of their ships aim which isn’t always the best. However, once players get a good feel for their ship, they’ll be in for the repeated action of high score runs.

Like any good shooter, it’s always important to have leaderboards. That’s what drives up the replay value of this game. Playing it time and time again will be enjoyable as players can attempt to achieve new high scores to show off on the game’s leaderboard. Thankfully, Battlefortress features enough of a challenge and decent gameplay that those who enjoy a good high score hunt will certainly love this game.

Another option players have while hunting down a high score is to insert a credit so they can continue on. Of course, on top of the $1.99 it costs to purchase this app, credits cost an additional price of $.99 cents for 4 credits. So it really depends on how deep you would like to go in the game without having to start over. However, as you play the game you can earn credits as well. I ended up earning 2 credits and was able to get myself deep into the game, reaching the 27th level. During that run I ended up overtaking the #1 spot on the leaderboards. Currently, there are fewer than 500 registered players on the leaderboards, but that still goes to show you how difficult it is for players to reach a level in the upper 20s.

The fortresses that players go up against continue to get more interesting and challenging the further they get and that really helps create some exciting gameplay. However, there comes a point early on where players will start to see a repeat of fortresses, though they are more heavily guarded and throw more projectiles at your ship.

Battlefortress is a game for shooter fans who want something that’s quick and easy to play, but also get a tough challenge.
