Sometimes people just have the burning desire to decimate some zombies. No tricky tactics, no fights for survival, no running away or hiding. They just want to step up and blow away wave after wave of the undead. Any players finding themselves in such a mood should definitely check out Apocalypse Zombie Commando. This game is part tower defense, part shooter, and a whole lot of fun.
In Apocalypse Zombie Commando, players take control of a soldier protecting a bunker from hordes of shambling enemy zombie soldiers. These aren't your every day zombies either, they are competent in the use of many fearsome weapons including motorcycles, rockets, and even tanks. The player's bunker is situated at the bottom of the screen and the zombie masses approach from the top of the screen. To attack them the player controls a gun that automatically fires with their finger. By moving the gun back and forth, players must direct the gunfire to destroy the approaching zombie soldiers before they reach the bunker. Players have three lives and each time a zombie reaches the bunker or the gun is hit by enemy fire a life is lost. By shooting down passing blimps players can replenish their lives, but if they have three lives already these blimps will carry nukes that will clear the screen of enemies instead of extra lives.
Finding the balance between shooting down blimps with nukes and attacking fast moving zombie targets brings a puzzle-like quality to the game and gives players a strategic advantage to protecting all their lives. This makes Apocalypse Zombie Commando much more interesting to play than if it simply asked players to shoot at zombies over and over again without thinking much. No doubt the point of this game is to waste as many zombies as possible as quickly as possible, but there is a subtle strategy involved and it makes the game that much more enjoyable.
The zombies and their armaments are all very well animated, and when they are destroyed they explode satisfyingly in little clouds of cartoony gore. More and more enemy types are introduced as the player progresses and each enemy type has its own specific pattern of attack. Players will have to pay close attention to make sure their bunker isn't caught off guard by zombies slipping past their guns. Power-ups also freshen up the gameplay every now and then.
Apocalypse Zombie Commando is a game about destroying zombies, pure and simple. It has some great little variations in the gameplay that make it easy to keep playing, but the basics of the game don't change much from level to level. Players will enjoy the detailed animations and appreciate the comedic nuances. This is a great little game of small, guilty pleasures.
