Sheep aren't loaded with natural defenses. They're great at standing around, chewing their cud, and waiting to be sheared. That's about it.

That's why Air Supply - SOS calls on players to foil the Time Travel Company: a greedy organization that kidnaps sheep, robs their fluffy down, and makes clothing. Though these distressed sheep are quantum sheep, they're still incapable of defending themselves. Do the right thing. Save Our Sheep ("SOS" - get it?).

Air Supply is a shooter inspired by the classic ZX Spectrum game Jetpac. Players endure waves of aliens while catching the quantum sheep that fall from the sky. The sheep need to be returned to the rocket ship waiting at the bottom of the screen. Once the requisite number is loaded, the player gets to progress to the next level (often accompanied by a "sheepy hug" of thanksgiving).

As the game goes on, enemy waves become thicker and are laced with smarter, deadlier aliens. But the biggest threat to the player is their oxygen supply. It rapidly depletes, and hitting an enemy or a projectile makes it go down faster. And obviously, a space voyage bereft of air is cut short pretty quickly. Luckily there are oxygen capsules to pick up, in addition to other power-ups and point multipliers. Collecting these baubles helps the player level-up, which unlocks upgrades in turn.

Maneuvering in Air Supply - SOS takes practice. The gravity is low, and the player jumps and shoots at the same time. But getting a handle on this odd control scheme is part of the fun, as is the sense of progression that comes with collecting sheep/power-ups and unlocking upgrades.

It's a simple game based on a simple concept, but slicing through waves of enemies just feels good. Better still, players can continue from the last enemy wave when they die, or they can start all over, which isn't a bad idea if a level is overwhelming and just a few more sheep are necessary for an upgrade.

With its simple but addictive gameplay, its gradually-escalating challenge, and its weird sense of humor, Air Supply - SOS is just a good time. Given the game's inspiration, it's no wonder many denizens of Britain would bow to Jetpac before bowing to the Queen.
