With a title like 1001 Ultimate Mahjong, this game doesn't really need an introduction. It's a Mahjong solitaire game that offers players 1001 different stacks to play through. For the Majong fan, it's pretty much an essential purchase.
The game doesn't immediately offer all 1001 stacks, players have to unlock them all through gradual progression and completion. It's a neat move as it means there's frequently something new to experience. Each of the stacks offer a different image and thus different challenge to traverse, whether that be a traditional Mahjong solitaire shape or something more modern such as a gun shape.
On the iPhone, it is a little tricky to see what's going on due to the size of the tiles but the screen space has been used efficiently so adjustment doesn't take long. Controls are simple and effective which helps a lot. The varied themes and backgrounds are subtle yet attractive, ensuring that 1001 Ultimate Mahjong feels a classy product. Five different tilesets are also available for those keen for some variation from the normal way of doing things.
All this is impressive when considering the price point: 1001 Ultimate Mahjong is free and even an Universal app. Players do have the option to unlock new stacks ahead of time if they so wish, with categories priced at $0.99 each or $4.99 for the lot. There's no requirement to do this though as these stacks will be unlocked as others are completed.
Excluding the screen limitations, 1001 Ultimate Mahjong is a fine game of Mahjong solitaire. It's soothing, relaxing and great fun to lose one's self in. There's hours upon hours of fun to be had and I can see it being a long term favorite for Mahjong fans.
