Word-A-Fall isn't going to win any prizes for its looks, but it is quite an enjoyable word game that focuses on the purist fun of creating words, rather than the many bells and whistles that other games throw in.
Letter tiles are tumbling down a waterfall and it's down to the player to tap on them to create a word, before swiping to the right to accept it. There are power-up tiles around, too, adding score multipliers or extra time, but ultimately, it's down to the player to react quickly. Speedy reactions are very useful here, given that the tiles don't waste any time falling down the waterfall. Similarly, besides offering positive tile bonuses, there are also some that subtract time or even blind the player's view briefly.
Three different modes are available with the classic one, lasting two minutes, and proving the simplest. The most satisfying, however, is WordSmith, requiring players to create words of at least four letters long, ensuring that they can't wimp out and stick to the easy three letter varieties. Rushing Rapids offers a similar challenge to Classic, but each word that is created speeds up the tiles quite significantly. It's a fun way of testing how quickly one can think up new words, though. All the more so when considering the Game Center integration, including challenges.
Word-A-Fall does falter in a few places, however. Besides not looking overly appealing, there's no way of viewing a word list at the end of a level and marvelling at the huge creations that can be made, only seeing the highest scoring word of the round. It's an unfortunate omission given that it's something that all word fans love to savour. It's also quite expensive for what it offers. $0.99 would be much more reasonable. Having said that, the purist side to Word-A-Fall is quite fun, even if it could do with a little more work.
