Wizards and Wagons, not to be confused with the NES action game classic Wizards & Warriors, is a trading-themed adventure RPG.

It's also highly original and extremely engaging, and offers a surprising amount of micromanagement.

What's a former hero to do

You play through the game as a former hero who made his fortune through monster-fighting, but watched your source of income quickly dry up with the coming of peaceful times.

When your house goes up for sale, a townsperson takes mercy on you. He gives you an old wagon and challenges you to build yourself back up by trading goods between towns for a profit.

Thus begins your journey, which is full of haggling, observation, and slime-slaying. Though the nefarious Dark Lord is gone, the roads are not quite safe. As you ferry goods back and forth, you're waylaid by bandits and monsters.

Luckily, you can arm your wagon with buffs and weaponry. Spells and projectiles have a way of making baddies keep their distance, which in turn keeps your goods safe.

Each town operates on a system of supply and demand. Ideally, you want to buy low and sell high (of course). But the cost of goods and the demand for products changes as days go by. There are occasional festivals too, during which you can buy specialized goods.

And if a life of buying and selling doesn't appeal to you, you can easily thrive off assignments handed out by the traders' guild. These involve arranged deliveries, as well as bounty-hunting and escort missions.

The bottom line

Wizards and Wagons's simple graphics hide a deep adventure that's well-paced despite all the tasks it puts on the table.

Granted, those simple graphics can be a bit problematic at times - bounties are hard to collect when you have no idea what enemy you're shooting at.

Don't let that deter you from a fruitful life on the road, though. Buy, buy, buy. Sell, sell, sell.
