Like a wave breaking on the shore, Tidal Rider swept its way onto the App Store charts this week settling firmly in the top 10. It’s a one-touch high score-chaser in which you pull surfing stunts while dodging seagulls and collecting coins.

The aim of the game is to get the highest score, and we have a few tips to help you do just that.

Don’t be too heavy handed
You might want to put your finger on the gas and simply cruise, but that’s not really the most efficient way to surf. Gaining momentum and then coasting back upwards gives you a better feel for how to control your little egg-shaped surfer dude, which will come in handy once you run into a whole flock of birds. It’s a good way to practice while playing it safe and still raking in points and coins.

Learn how to dodge birds effectively
Birds are your biggest obstacle in Tidal Rider, and they can be a pain if you don’t know how to avoid them. Always look ahead for these flying fiends. When you’re about two seconds away from the bird let go of the screen and fall up the screen for the briefest of moments before putting your finger back down. It takes some quick coordination, but once you get the feel for it you’ll be able to do it over and over.

Don’t worry too much about coin collecting
While coins are great if you’re out to unlock all of the surfers in the game, they’re not really necessary for anything else. Know when grabbing that coin is worth the risk. Things change quickly in Tidal Rider, and going out of your way for one coin isn’t always the wisest course of action.

Tidal Rider is simple in concept, but these small nuances will make all the difference when you’re trying to beat your record score. Surfs up!
