The best mobile games like Harry Potter that aren't Harry Potter

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 13th, 2023

Hi, in case you weren’t aware: JK Rowling is a bigot, and the latest game based on her Harry Potter series revolves around an antisemetic plot. Don’t play it. Don’t let you friends play it. It’s bad and supports a bad person!

With that out of the way, I did some thinking about what kinds of games might be good to play instead. Games that might have some similarities to certain aspects of Rowling’s wizarding world, but without the middling writing, racist undertones, and deplorable author. It wasn’t easy, but there are definitely some mobile titles that fit the bill. See below:

The 5 Best Mobile Puzzle RPGs

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 24th, 2022

RPGs with puzzle mechanics feel like the perfect fit for mobile. There’s something about a game that moves at a gentile pace while having a somewhat predictable-yet-challenging set of mechanics that can morph as you progress through some kind of grand adventure that feels right at home in your pocket.

With the recent release of Hero Emblems II, I thought it’d be good to revisit some of the absolute best puzzle RPGs that iOS has to offer, just in case you missed out on some of these incredible titles.

The Top 10 Mobile Games of the Generation

Posted by Campbell Bird on October 8th, 2020

With new consoles coming out soon, it's inevitable for folks to want to look back and determine what were the best games that came out across the current console's lifecycle. This process is commonly referred to as picking the best games of the generation, but that terminology is making less and less sense as the games industry expands beyond console hardware and the systems themselves see half-step upgrades.

As silly as it may be as an exercise, I thought it would be fun to go back and look at "this generation" of mobile titles and pick and rank the ten best. In terms of time period, this takes us back to November 2013, which is actually interesting timing for mobile games. It's a world where Flappy Bird already released but hadn't yet become a cultural phenomenon, and the latest and greatest iPhone was the 5S.

Anyway, enough preambling, let's get to the list. See below for the best mobile games of the generation:

The 5 Best Mobile Games Like Grindstone

Apple Arcade made a splash when it first launched, granting access to over 50 games as soon as it became available. Of those titles, the one that seemed to grab most people’s attention was Grindstone, a matching puzzle game from Capy Games.

In order to enjoy Grindstone though, you have to activate an Apple Arcade subscription, which—even now—doesn’t quite feel like a quality value proposition for most people. Luckily, there are some great games on the regular old App Store that share some DNA with Grindstone. I’d even go so far as to say over half the games on this list are better than Grindstone, though I know that’s probably not a statement most folks will agree with.

In any case, check out the picks below. Oh, and click here to check out all the other great lists we’ve been making recently.

Ticket to Earth is a game that’s grown on me since its release back in March of 2017. At first I hated it, then I kinda liked it, then I thought it was legitimately great. After developer Robot Circus put out a third chapter to the game earlier this month, I now think Ticket to Earth is probably one of the all-time best mobile games around.

It's been a pretty spectacular year for mobile games, with all sorts of unique titles sprouting up, many by surprise. With top-knotch games launching on a near weekly basis, it's been quite a task narrowing my top choices down to just ten entries. I've opted to present my list in no particular order -- these games all excel at very different things, excellent exemplars of what their genres do best. Without further ado, here are my favorite games of 2017.

2017 was a great year... for games at least. Putting together list of 10 of the best mobile games out there was somehow even harder than it was last year. After playing 350+ games this year and reviewing 213 of them for 148Apps though, I've somehow been able to put together a list of ten games that were my absolute favorites from this year. Check them out below.

The best mobile games to play during dreaded Thanksgiving travel

Posted by Jessica Famularo on November 22nd, 2017

Thanksgiving Day is, generally speaking, a chance to spend some quality time with family and friends and eat inordinate amounts of food. However, the days leading up to the holiday call for quite the pilgrimage, especially if you're traveling from quite a ways away.

Congested highways, busy airports, and the general stress of being in transit can take its toll, so try to take care ofyourself during your Thanksgiving Day travel. You'll need all of that energy for dealing with your eccentric uncle. We're here to recommend a few quality mobile games for you to enjoy on your travels (unless you're driving, that is. Don't play and drive, friends).

Here are the best indie games that debuted on the App Store this week

The App Store has been running a pretty spectacular promotion of indie games over the past few days, featuring a selection of indie games quite prominently on the storefront while releasing a brand new indie game each day. The promotion is running until Monday, but Apple's come out to say that they'll continue to feature indie games in their own section moving forward.

As the week winds down, let's take a look at all of the lovely games that launched in the promotion thus far. There's a good mix of fast-paced arcade hits, RPGs, roguelikes, puzzlers, and more.
