148Apps 2013 wrAPP-Up - Happy New Year's Resolution: Fitness Apps for All!

Posted by Stacy Barnes on December 31st, 2013

Twas the week before New Year’s and all through the land, no humans were eager for the diet they planned (Deep sigh). It’s the same story every year: not long after the ball drops in Times Square and the champagne runs out, people all over the world face the dreaded New Year’s Resolution. After all the eggnog, fudge, and candy canes, it’s no surprise that losing weight and getting fit tops the list. And these days there are a plethora of digital goodies out there making anyone’s quest for fitness that much easier. Many of these apps even throw the motivation and inspiration in for free. In other words, you’re running out of excuses. You can thank me later.

So, Happy New Year! Here are some resolutions to those resolution blues.

Workout (7 Minute Body Fitness Exercise)

No time or money to join a gym? This app's for you. Choose “Matt” (McConaughey-like), “Arnold” (Schwarzeneggerish), or “Kate” as your trainer and off you go! It’s just a 7 minute workout - 30 seconds for each exercise, with 10 seconds to transition. Warm up with jumping jacks, followed by the wall sit, some push-ups, abdominal crunches, and so on. The 8-bit trainer graphic demonstrates each move to some pretty funky music (fortunately, with one simple tap the music goes away). Bonus - the app will even log workouts to your calendar. And if 7 minutes just isn’t enough, hit repeat and do it again!

We gave 3.5 stars to Fire Escapes, the baby-saving game from developer headRUSH. It's been updated to include new babies (Ninja baby!), achievements, new controls and more. Check the full list below.

What's new in 1.1?
There's a new baby on the block! Be on the lookout - he's dressed in Green.
Just when you think you got them beat, the Ninjas learn some new moves.
Game Center Achievements? Got 'em. Try and get Tilt Hero.
We hear you that tap controls are the way to play and so we made them the default for new players.
Tilt sensitivity has been improved for those with a steady hand.
We also updated the help screen to let you know that you can toggle between control types in the Options menu.

Shawnimals Gives iOS Users Their Own Custom Ninja Creation Tools via Ninjatown Ninja Builder

Posted by Rob Rich on January 5th, 2012

It all started with a clever design and lots and lots of felt. After that initial success, Shawnimals grew into a fairly notable "indie" brand. This soon lead to a Nintendo DS game, followed by another on iOS. After all this activity, it's a wonder no one thought to make a custom ninja creation app. Well, until now anyway.

And Ninjatown Ninja Builder does just that. It incorporates elements from the classic and very recognizable Shawnimals style and lets users go nuts. Moods, body styles, backgrounds, clothing, colors and accessories can all be fiddled with in order to craft that perfect shadow warrior representation. Or just to make a goofy looking ninja. Whatever they're in the mood for, really.

In addition to the new app, Shawnimals and Venan have also released an update for Ninjatown: Trees of Doom!. Perhaps the app was made to celebrate the update, or perhaps it's the other way around. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. No matter the reason, owners of the iOS platformer can now enjoy a winter theme as well as new mountain and zombie ninja avatars.

Really though, Ninjatown Ninja Builder is what we're talking about here. And it's available on the App Store right now, ready to scratch that adorable ninja-making itch. The basic app is totally free, with two (thus far) additional content packs priced at $0.99 each.
