iPad App - Designed for iPad

This week at 148Apps.com, site founder Jeff Scott welcomed the Kindle Fire into the tablet fold with an overview of his impressions of the device. Scott says, "...while the Kindle Fire is around 40 percent the cost of a base level iPad, it’s capabilities are even less. It just so happens that those capabilities match up well with what a typical consumer uses a tablet device for. Because of that, the Kindle Fire will be a strong competitive device to the iPad. When it comes down to it, it’s the cost that matters to a very large portion of the buying public, not the capabilities."

Meanwhile, our sister site, GiggleApps, took a closer look at a new educational app for children, iLuv Drawing Animals. Reviewer Amy Solomon writes, "iLuv Drawing Animals is a nice choice for kids who are interested in learning the very basics of drawing cartoony animals that are cute and relatively easy to draw. I like how these illustrations are broken down into smaller shapes that kids will easily understand and have had experience with, and the narration is pleasant and easy to follow."

Finally, on AndroidRundown, Carter Dotson announced the public availability of Google Music, an interesting development for all music lovers, no matter the device. Dotson writes, "Most importantly, this means that Google is now in the business of one of the big pillars of media, and it addresses a gaping hole in the Android Market. With videos and books already addressed, now the store is complete with music to go along with apps. Google is directly putting themselves in competition with iTunes, and they are making their operating system much closer in terms of features to iOS devices. This was a necessary move for Google."

Our GiggleApps sister site featured a new review of Transport Jigsaw Puzzles 123 for iPad from writer Amy Solomon. She writes, "Transport Jigsaw Puzzles 123 for iPad is the terrific sequel to the original app, Farm Jigsaw Puzzles 123 for iPad. Seven scenes are included here that wonderfully introduce many vehicles and means of transportation, both traditional and unique, as well as a very fun, puzzle experience with the choice of using 2 to 16 puzzle pieces per scene and include hints if needed. There is also an iPhone version of this app available with 5 puzzle scenes included."

Finally, on 148Apps.biz, site founder Jeff Scott recapped his recent visit to the Sprint Open Solutions Conference, saying, "During the keynote from CEO Dan Hesse, he mentioned many times how great it was to have the iPhone on Sprint now (and to no longer have to answer the question of when they would get the iPhone). The addition of the iPhone 4 and 4S should allow Sprint to have their best year ever this year. Needing to have just one million adds to reach that record level. The iPhone should easily help them retain users and gain new ones."

Ice Tales Revives Retro Gaming

Posted by Blake Grundman on June 2nd, 2011
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

If there was one thing that made retro gaming great, it was the simplistic game designs.  Never was the player forced to learn different key combinations or gestural controls to play a game, it was just easy and straightforward to understand.  While this may not seem like a big deal to some, the newly released Ice Tales is a return to form that is very welcome in my eyes.

Embracing the day when you didn't need a Ph.D in physics to solve a puzzle, the game combines streamlined mechanics with an amusing eight bit soundtrack to create this generation's version of retro goodness.  What is old is new again, and this game is here to prove it.

On top of everything else, if you become a fan of the game on facebook, you can get the opportunity to win one of five hundred free copies of the game.  If that isn't a good reason to support a title, then I don't know what is.

Giveaway what? Where? Well, here and there.

To celebrate their release of Doodle Lab 101, and Christmas (the season of giving! Ping me and I'll send you my PayPal account info for donations.), FunTribe is giving away a $10 iTunes gift card to a lucky winner. There are stipulations though, so don't think that you'll win just for being on the "nice" list.

Here is how to win a $10 iTunes Gift Card:

STEP 1: Write a review about Doodle Lab 101 ver1.1, not Lite.

STEP 2: Follow FunTribe (http://twitter.com/FunTribe) on Twitter and tweet the following message: "Follow & RT @FunTribe to receive a $10 iTunes Gift card by buying Doodle Lab 101 for $0.99. More details http://on.fb.me/cnVEiU"

STEP 3: Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the following details:
- Your Twitter ID
- Your AppStore nickname from which the review was posted

The giveaway runs to December 22nd, so hurry up and buy your copy of Doodle Lab 101 so you can get in on the drawing (you have to buy the game to review it on iTunes... just an FYI). If you feel like livin' on the edge like Aerosmith though, you can enter our drawing for one of ten promo codes for the game, thus allowing you to enter the contest for free. We'll go easy on the requirements though.

Here's how to win one of the ten promo codes:

STEP 1: Comment on this post.

STEP 2: Pray that you are selected by our completely random automated system.

That's right, there's no need to be the fastest person in the world. All you have to do is comment on this post. This one right here that you're reading RIGHT NOW. You could say, "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy Hanukkah!" if you want, or you could ask me for that PayPal donation info - you know, whatever works best for you.

Good luck and happy holidays, from our family to yours!

Feel the Holiday Spirit As Ocarina Goes Free for 72 Hours

Posted by Blake Grundman on December 8th, 2010
iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad
Our rating: starstarstarstarstar :: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED :: Read Review »

Tis the season to both give and receive.  iOS developer Smule seems to understand that better than anyone else, and accordingly, are ready to announce a special holiday giveaway.  Starting at 1pm on Tuesday December 7th, their critically acclaimed program Ocarina will be absolutely free.  The only catch is that it is only for a limited time.

Looking back in time through the magic 148Apps.com crystal ball, we can see that not only has the app been well received by numerous junkets, but our very own Jeff Scott gave the then fledgling software a perfect five star rating.  Trust us on this, we were not the only place that told you it was the best around, either.  Word of mouth spread so quickly that it went on to garner over 2.8 million downloads since the original release in November of 2008.

Now boasting an impressive online community of digital ocarina composers, this is where the true appeal of the app lies.  This is so much the case that the online library of composed pieces has reached an astounding sixty million playbacks.  Here is what our own review had to say about it, way back in the day:

"Overall Ocarina, while not the most exciting musical instrument on the iPhone, does use the network connection on the iPhone to it’s fullest to create a fantastic social application. It’s a lot of fun." -- Jeff Scott

The fact that Smule is willing to give one of their marque titles away, even if it is only for a limited time, is commendable and another reminder that sometimes it is better to give than to receive.  In this case though, we will happily take part in the receiving as well!  Be sure to head to the App Store and pick it up before the promotion ends on December 10th at 1PM.  When an app manages to gain our five star approval, it would be a crime to let this opportunity slip by.

Readdle Giving Away iPads

Posted by Brad Hilderbrand on November 24th, 2010

If you've already checked out our massive list of Black Friday sales then you may have noticed a few cool apps from Readdle available for great prices. Well it seems they're a company that keeps on giving, as they've also announced that they'll be giving away three lucky winners a free iPad.

In order to enter into the sweepstakes you must answer me these questions three. No wait, that's not right, but you do have to take the following steps:

1. Own any Readdle app
2. Follow @Readdle on Twitter
3. Send out the following Tweet sometime between November 24-30: "Readdle Apps #BlackFriday Sale. Follow @readdle, RT to win an #iPad: http://readdle.com/blackfriday"

Once you've completed all the tasks set before you you'll be entered to win one of Apple's wonder tablets. In order to cause general jealousy amongst friends and family we recommend if you win that you wrap the iPad and then place it under the tree with a card addressed to you from Santa. Then act shocked when you open it and snidely comment how you must have been so much nicer over the past year than everyone else in order to be worthy of such an amazing present.

We'll take this opportunity to say good luck to everyone who enters and please know that we're already jealous of you even before you've won. Just because we write about the iPad doesn't mean we can actually afford it so congratulations, you're better than us.

If you've got any questions or want to check out the official rules then head on over to Readdle's Black Friday page and have a look around. Otherwise enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend, especially since you'll be using it to gather up as many horseshoes, rabbits' feet and four-leaf clovers as you can find.

Coming Monday -- Best App Ever Awards Massive Promo Code Giveaway

Posted by Jeff Scott on January 8th, 2009

In celebration of all of the nominated apps in the 2008 Best App Ever Awards, we'll be hosting a massive promo code giveaway starting Monday, 1/12. Thanks to the developers of the promoted applications, we have over 200 promo codes for 40 different apps to give away! We're going to give them all away next week. There are two way to sign yourself up for the giveaway:

1 - Follow us on Twitter (@148apps) - we'll randomly DM a promo code to some of our followers.

2 - Become a fan of our Facebook page. I'll randomly send messages to our Facebook fans with promo codes.

It's just that easy. The smart person would do both -- it doubles your chances.

In addition, we're going to give away a grand prize with the winner getting 20 promo codes.

Check back next week for more details.
