Say Hello to Hello Music

Posted by Rob Rich on December 22nd, 2011

The concept behind the Hello Music website is a simple but brilliant one: provide members with information regarding all manner of deals and sales, on all kinds of musical goodies. The Hello Music app does pretty much the same thing, only on iOS. In other words, with an account on the website and the app on a phone, anyone looking for great deals is covered.

The site, and by extension the application, will per-negotiate discounts on a set (and limited) quantity of various items. These range from tangible objects such as amps, pedals and such, to less tangible things like studio time. Since quantities are limited the deals don't last long (usually around 48 hours), but with a handy-dandy iOS app to monitor these deals on the go it becomes much less of an issue.

Setting up an account on the website is free. The app is free. Suffice it to say, any musicians with even a little interest in savings (and an iPhone, of course) need to take a look at this.

Amazon Launches Price Check App Just In Time for Black Friday

iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad

The holiday shopping season is an incredibly stressful time. You find what you think is the perfect gift, but it seems a little expensive and you start to wonder if you couldn't find it cheaper somewhere else. Of course, if you walk away now you may find out that the price is no better at other stores or, even worse, by the time you decide to buy everyone is sold out of the product you want. Amazon is trying to alleviate your fears at least a little by launching the new Price Check app, which should go a long way in helping shoppers find the best deals.

Price Check allows users to scan a product's barcode with their iPhone, or even take a picture of the item in question or say or type its name into Amazon's database. The app then scours the Amazon Marketplace to find the item in question and provide a price list. If the online price is better than what you can find in-store then you can buy the item with one click and then go on your merry way.

The app is constantly being updated, but Amazon promises that there are already "millions of products" in the database so hopefully you should be able to find what you're looking for. All searches are automatically sorted with the lowest prices at the top, as well as information on shipping costs or if the product qualifies for free shipping. Is it handy? You bet it is.

Apps like these also force physical stores to be very upfront and honest about their prices. While department stores may claim that sweater or camera is "on sale," a quick perusal of Price Check will let you know if the price being offered is truly a good deal or if the store is just deflating the price of an outrageous markup. For the informed shopper, the power is now in your hands.

How To Get 20% off Your App Store Purchases (Legally) - Part II

Posted by Jeff Scott on March 29th, 2010

Last year we brought you news that Best Buy had a great, but short sale on iTunes gift cards. These sale cards are a great way to get all of your app purchase on the app store at a discount. As a matter of fact, it's the only way to get a discount on the App Store. These iTunes gift card sales come few and far between. But for those of you in the US, there's a new sale you can take advantage of.

Now through April 2nd, Costco has $60 iTunes Gift Card packages on sale for $48.99, a nearly 20% savings. There is not tax on the cards at Costco -- at least not here in California, your local laws may vary. Also, Apple may or may not charge tax on the purchase, again depending on where you live.

There was an sign on the display at Costco that said limit 2 per member, but I bought 6 and got the full discount on each. Again, your local rules may vary.

With the iPad quickly approaching, this is a great way to add virtual money to your iTunes account to be ready to get all those new iPad apps. This also works for those of you without a credit card -- just use cash at Costco to get the cards.

If you head to Costco to get this deal, what was it like at your local Costco? Were they out of stock? Did they limit you to 2? Let us know in the comments.

The developers of Hexy, Fifth Ace, want to offer you something a little extra and give you the opportunity to play Hexy over Wifi. To do this you need a second copy of Hexy though. So for the next 20 people that send in their iTunes receipt showing their purchase of Hexy, they will send you back a promo code good for a second copy of Hexy to give to a friend.

This is only good for the next 20 people and only open to users of the US iTunes App Store. Forward your iTunes receipt to [email protected].
