We talk to Beamdog about Siege of Dragonspear for mobile, classic D&D RPGs, and why a level editor won't be coming any time soon

Siege of Dragonspear is available right now on the App Store. It's a stand-alone game that fills some of the story gaps between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. It's also the first bit of official new content for the series in more than a decade.

We took the chance to ask the game's Lead Designer, and the Studio Head at Beamdog, Phillip Daigle some questions about his experience working on the game, the controversy that surrounded its original release on PC, and how more people than ever are enjoying strategic D and D RPGs.

Beamdog Games has updated Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition to support iPhones.

The update also includes a lot of other upgrades, including the ability to change font sizes, switching between the mage's spellbook and priest spells is easier, and of course some bug fixes. NPCs have been updated as well. Now if they are blinded they will roam around until they happen upon someone to attack. Also, Drizzt Do'Urden finally has his classic scimitars to closer represent his character in the Forgotten Realms book series.

There are plenty more improvements to explore in the game. You can check out Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for $9.99 on the App Store.

What was old isn't new again. In fact, this iOS port may do more harm to the Baldur's Gate brand than good.

One of the best RPGs of the 1990s comes to the iPad. It's still great but that greatness is marred by some serious control issues.

Baldur's Gate for the iPad Coming This Summer

Posted by Kevin Stout on March 29th, 2012

[/caption]Recently, there’s been talk of a Baldur’s Gate port coming to iOS in the future. Now, more information has been released from an interview with COO of Beamdog, Cameron Tofer, at Kotaku.com.

The big news is that it’s slated for a summer release, will be under $10, and will support multiplayer.

Baldur’s Gate will have a completely redesigned interface made for the iPad where text will be larger, pinch to zoom will be added, and gestures between screens (instead of tabs) will be added.

"We want to bring it forward, make it nice and swishy and smooth and things like that," said Tofer.

There might end up being a Kickstarter project to help fund the Baldur’s Gate port, as Tofer referred to the success of the Kickstarter project for Wasteland 2.

All mention of Baldur’s Gate for iOS seems to be actually mentioning Baldur’s Gate for the iPad. I’ve seen no mention of the terms iOS or iPhone. So it’s possible that Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn (released later in the year) will be iPad-only games. Sorry iPhone/iPod Touch users.
