On the surface, Spirit Walkers: Curse of the Cypress Witch looks like it's going to be a very typical Hidden Object game. In reality, however, it's more of a simple adventure game, an ideal bridge between casual games such as this and more complex point and click adventures. It's pretty fun, too, although a little on the short side.
Players control Maylynn, a woman whose friends have got into some difficulty while looking for a ghost. Things turn all the stranger when they find themselves having to travel between different dimensions and times. Oh, plus there's a wedding to arrange, also. As is typical for games like these, the story is rather bizarre at times.
Gameplay is mostly of the puzzle variety. Wandering around the different scenes, players must solve things such as how to get a grandfather clock working again and complete pattern matching challenges. For the most part, the puzzles are pretty simple. The only confusion comes from knowing what to do or where to go next which can be quite vague. At times, it's all too easy to succumb to the allure of the hint button, especially with no punishment issued for using it frequently. It does, however, significantly shorten a game that already only takes a few hours to complete.
There are some hidden object scenes to complete but these are particularly easy to solve with the object list offering silhouettes rather than names, making it all the easier to decipher. The only frustration here comes from the small selection of objects that are hidden behind others, so sometimes it's worth randomly tapping on the screen for clues.
It all makes for a gentle but enjoyable enough title, one that makes a change from the more safe Hidden Object games out there. It's a little on the short side but at least the price reflects that.
