Shapist is a sliding box puzzle that transforms what would normally be an ordinary game into a creative concept. What’s so unique about Shapist is that there are no tutorials, no scores, no menus, and there isn’t even a title screen. It throws players straight into the game and encourages them to experiment.

Once thrown into the game, it doesn’t take long to figure out how things work. Players are presented with blocks of different colors. Through trial and error, sliding the blocks around reveals a gray rectangle field. When that area is cleared of blocks, it’s possible to tap on it to fly through space onto the next puzzle. Puzzles are initially relatively easy, but they become more difficult as different features are introduced. Players will eventually notice magnets as they advance through the game. With the magnets, opposites attract and the equal poles repel. There are also springs that can be compressed, but they extend again until they are surrounded by other pieces and the puzzle wall. The game also features pieces that rotate and a couple other hidden features that I’ll leave out as an element of surprise.

It’s great that Shapist isn’t always about sliding. With the other features thrown in, it requires players to actually think outside of the box. Additionally, the sharp and crisp interface, combined with the minimalistic style and sound, help to make a creative puzzler that still feels familiar. The only downfall is that Shapist isn’t too forgiving. It’s a true puzzler so there aren’t any clues, power-ups, or level passes. If players get stuck on a level, they may be stuck on it forever until a solution is discovered. This means that the game may not be enjoyed by anyone who doesn’t have much patience.

Despite the lack of help, Shapist is a fun puzzler that can be relaxing at times. The developer found a way to take a classic concept and make it unique. Puzzle fanatics and anyone interested in a game that isn’t about keeping score should consider adding this one to their collection. With over 50 puzzles to solve and discover, there’s plenty of gameplay value to enjoy.
