Rhythm games are pretty fun from time to time, even if they’re not quite as popular as they once were. Robots are cool too, so that should make Robot Dance Party a cool and fun game, right? Actually yes, it’s both of those things to an extent and quite appealing to dive into when you’ve got a spare few minutes.

You start out by creating your robot; assembling it piece by piece. Besides looking suitably wacky, it’s also pretty useful to progression. As you play each part individually gains experience, which then offers boosts and aids. Plus it’s satisfying to feel like you’re getting somewhere.

The real strength comes in busting some moves, though. Each dance track involves a series of fast taps. Some moves involve simply tapping once, while others might require multiple taps. Then there are sliding moves and ones that involve holding a finger to the screen. Individually, each move is simple enough to pull off, but soon enough Robot Dance Party combines many at once - requiring some deft finger tapping. On the iPhone 5 there's enough room to do this well, even with small hands, although I suspect it'd be trickier with an iPad.

Crucially though, it’s fun to master. It’ll take a little while but Robot Dance Party keeps it charming even if the music isn’t particularly special. Robot Dance Party goes some way in compensating for newbies too, by breaking each track up into segments so if you perform well enough at one, you’re ok to be slightly weaker at the next. Culminating in a simple to play freestyle section can also boost your points tally.

There are multiplayer battle modes too, enabling you to take it in turns to out-dance other players around the world. That’s a nice addition to an already enjoyable enough package.

It’ll take a bit of practice, but the trickle feeding of experience ensures you’ll often feel like you’re getting somewhere. While the music isn’t great, the general beat and gameplay will keep you keen on playing more of Robot Dance Party.
