It's a little simple to look at but don't let that fool anyone, Word Forward is a highly enjoyable word game.

It's a game all about making words out of a series of tiles within a grid, which is a concept that might seem a little too familiar to some. Word Forward mixes this idea up though, with the idea being to gradually reduce one's score by doing so. Each tile is given a score according to its difficulty rating with 100 points going to Z and U, while 10 points go to A or E. Each level requires reaching a particular target score by removing expensive tiles, so the key is targeting the trickier letters.

It's a fun take on a familiar format and adds a certain level of strategy to things. Rather than simply trying to create long words, often the best idea is to make shorter words that get rid of the Zs and Xs of the board. Some assistance is available in the form of bombs, swaps, and redos, but these come at a price. Purchased with coins, the currency can be earned either through playing the game or by buying an in-app purchase. It's possible to succeed without this, though.

Working on a level by level basis, it's a shame that Word Forward doesn't have an Endless mode tied into it, but there's still plenty to sink one's teeth into. It's a free game backed up by ads, which oddly can't be removed by purchasing anything, but these adverts aren't too obtrusive.

Throughout, Word Forward is a simple yet beguiling title. It's basic to look at but with that focus squarely on the fun that can be had from creating words, it certainly has that 'just one more go' mentality.
