One of the most interesting parts of our planet's history, dinosaurs and what became of them, has always intrigued people. I suspect it's down to the mystery that we can't actually guarantee a lot of what has been discovered and determined about them. Piecing together such history is fascinating. Walking with Dinosaurs: Inside their World is an app that aims to make it all the more interesting through a series of interactive elements and some fantastic narration by Stephen Fry.

Ideally suited to the iPad, Walking with Dinosaurs: Inside their World is akin to an interactive book. Three core sections are available, covering the people who tracked down information on the creatures, a look at many different dinosaurs individually, and a features section answering many questions people may have on the subject.

In each case, things are laid out clearly yet in an interesting manner. There's never too much text, ideally lending itself to a casual read while on the sofa, yet still containing all the relevant information within. Short paragraphs work well to keep readers' attention, and a series of animations help all the more. These animations are 3D recreations of the dinosaurs in movement as well as in battle with each other. There's also narration by Stephen Fry throughout if the user so wishes to listen, with his calming tones ever welcome.

In all, Walking with Dinosaurs: Inside their World promises 280 interactive 3D models, 60 photorealistic models of dinosaurs and 200 pages of text. It sounds substantial, because it is, but it never feels overwhelming. It would have been nice to be able to divide the dinosaur encyclopaedia up according to period of time or whether they're herbivores or carnivorous but it's still quite the exciting selection for the dinosaur enthusiast.

Spanning the ages, I suspect both young and old will find plenty to love about Walking with Dinosaurs: Inside their World. It's so much more interesting than reading a regular book on the subject.
