Sky Defenders is a survival game for the iPhone and iPad that employs top-down gameplay. It's a unique take on a superhero flying game that provides quite a bit of action with a lot of space to explore and throw down some sweet power-up combos.

While the point of the game is to fly around, beat up bad guys and score lots of points, Sky Defenders is more about how the user experiences the gameplay in that it has the user look down at the screen to play. At first it's kind of awkward since most are used to holding their screen out in front for most games. However, this game makes the player hold the device out flat and parallel to the floor. It's no problem at all and actually provides a pretty cool gaming experience.

This type of top-down gaming means that moves have to be precise since it's super sensitive to the accelerometer. If the device is tilted too much the superhero almost always jerks to one side or the other and flies into a bad guy. A little bit of practice will have players flying circles around enemies in no time.

The game is setup in a virtual sandbox so there is plenty of room to fly around in, but the true challenge is to stay within a smaller area. There, the player can rack up power-up combos such as lighting, ice power, shields and bombs to take out enemies in handfuls. Within the carnage inlies bonuses in the form of points as well as time, which allows the gamer to continue playing to rack up even more points.

Sky Defenders' motion controls will have most gamers loving the ability to really challenge themselves with learning precision movements. The good news is that tilting isn't all that the game has going for it as its superhero firepower and relentless enemies make for an explosive combo.
