It should be noted that Rebel Hero HD is one of the more violent games available in the App Store. It is rated 12+ for "Frequent/Intense Realistic Violence." This is cartoon violence, but violence nonetheless. It is jam packed with knives, guns, and magic, all accompanied by frequent spurts of blood. For the older players, while not perfect, this is still a moderately fun and somewhat addicting game that is worthy of a look.

The basic objective of the game is to use guns, knives, and magic to destroy the onslaught of enemies. Each defeated enemy drops jewels that may be used to purchase or upgrade weapons. Every now and then they will also drop a health pack. The enemies are different types of soliders, attacking with swords, guns, and bombs. Guns are great to attack from long range, while melee weapons are perfect if the soldiers get too close.

Players control their character with a virtual thumbstick and three buttons. The thumbstick controls directional movement while the buttons are used for the three weapon classes: melee, gun, and explosive. The controls work well, but sometimes it does become difficult to target enemies accurately.

After each level, players may purchase weapons, health, ammo, and magic, in addition to weapon upgrades. Of course, more coins may be purchased via an in-app purchase. As many as 30,000 coins may be purchased for $9.99.

The graphics in this game, while done in a cartoon style, are polished and refined. The sound effects are also well done and help players become immersed in the game. However, even so, the gameplay really isn't engaging enough to keep players coming back for more. Unfortunately, the level design and gameplay become repetitive, keeping this game from becoming a real competitor. Regardless, the app is free and is still worth a try.
