Pet Wars HD is a game where dog wizards fight robot cats. For many, that’s probably all they needed to hear. Fortunately for the rest of us, there is enough good gameplay to back up that gloriously insane concept.

In Pets Wars HD, cats and dogs are fighting, as cats and dogs tend to do. Players take control of a lone dog wizard attempting to push back the invading horde of robot cats. Keep in mind that this is all presented in high quality, high fantasy painted artwork full of smooth animations that really do justice to such an epic tale. What could be more appropriate than two massive celestial dog heads barking away an encroaching wave of hovering cyborg kittens? Slightly less appropriate but equally epic is the techno soundtrack by DJ Marcel Woods which just brings the ridiculousness to a whole new level. It's the best kind of silly.

Luckily, there is actually a pretty good game underneath all of this cuddly violent nonsense. Cats come in waves and players simply tap to shoot magic from the wizard's staff. Players can also drag a variety of spells onto the battlefield like howling winds, sleep waves and brainwashing rays. Later enemies, including occasional bosses, get tough so proper use of these limited spells is crucial. Fortunately, new abilities can be bought and everything from spell strength to attack speed to magic capacity can be upgraded. Plus, loot is dropped often enough that paying for more is rarely needed. There does come a point where just tapping and dragging gets a little tedious though. It’s like manual tower defense with only one tower. However, these extra systems do a pretty good job at masking that core shortcoming.

Again though, Pet Wars HD is a game where dog wizards fight cat robots. That’s victory enough. The fact that the gameplay is even halfway decent is really just a bonus.
