Let’s get the comparisons out of the way. Mighty Strike Team is a lot like Super Crate Box. It’s not a rip off, but it’s clearly heavily inspired by it. On the plus side, this is far from a bad thing.

Set in a world in which alien insects are threatening our very way of existence, the game is a series of one screen levels full of platforms and enemies. Think Bubble Bobble or one of the many other arcade games of the 1980s and you’re not far off. It’ll take you seconds to know how to play the game, although a tutorial certainly makes it easier. Virtual buttons are available for walking around, jumping, and firing your weapon. Each being large enough to get your fingers around easily enough.

Each level offers a different objective, such as kill x number of enemies within a set time, or survive a certain length of time. It’s simple stuff but keeps the action reasonably varied, rather than too samey. You can unlock new weapons too which go some way to giving you a further sense of progression.

Mighty Strike Team can, and often is, quite taxing at times, relying on your reaction skills to get you out of a bind. You can survive one hit though your shield, but Mighty Strike Team has that old school feel to it in every sense, meaning you’re going to die more often than in modern games. The enemies don’t have patterns to follow exactly, but you do gradually learn that they each react in certain ways so practice makes perfect.

It’s pretty fun though, so you’ll forgive it. The short levels lend themselves to the mobile format, meaning you can dip in and out while still achieving something. It’s ideal stress relief, too.
