There are a lot of photography apps out there. A lot. So many you could easily write cliches about having a dollar for each one. New apps need to offer something different, which is fortunately exactly what Matter does.
Matter is an app that allows you to add geometric 3d shapes to your photos, thereby manipulating the shadows and reflections contained elsewhere in the image. It sounds a little odd and takes some practice to truly get great results, but it makes a pleasant change from the norm.
Through a fairly straightforward process, you can pick and choose which shapes to use before moving them around the screen, and making small adjustments to change how the rest of the image looks. Unlike so many other apps, there aren't any predefined filters here or the usual bunch of saturation and brightness settings. Instead, Matter focuses on the one task of adding these shapes.
There's a decent amount of depth to what you can manipulate too, such as the option to apply masks to erase certain parts of a photo or adjust shadows more individually. You don't have to do everything, but it's handy to have so many options.
There are four different packs to choose from, so there's a reasonable amount of variety here. The key is to experiment and figure out what works best in which scenario. It's also possible to create short videos of the object spinning, which is a cool touch in adding a more futuristic feel to the app's creations.
While Matter is going to take a little while to truly master and get the best results from, it doesn't take long to actually process anything, making it ideal on a mobile format. As a different take on the usual photo adjustment side of things, it's an interesting diversion.
