It’s a little bit awkward when an app suggests you do something, then points out that you need to spend money to do exactly that. That’s one of Magisto’s missteps, but fortunately they’re not too common. For the most part this is a fun video editing app, albeit one that’s vastly improved if you choose to spend money.
Aimed at those who want to edit videos but have no idea where to start, Magisto is very simple to use. You merely choose a few photos or video clips, pick out a theme, and Magisto does the rest. It’s not overly quick at times, though. On my iPhone 5, I found it a little slow on the uptake when picking out photos and creating the video.
Still, Magisto is very convenient. It might take time to process, but it doesn’t take you long to put things together. There’s a choice of themes and soundtracks to tie into what you’re creating, with these themes relating to common objectives such as baby videos and wedding or birthday snaps. Magisto will also make things on its own, thereby surprising you with what it’s come up with.
The premium pricing does interfere with your options, though, so you might find yourself tempted to subscribe for the sake of more choice. Sticking with the free version, you can only use up to ten photos at once with Magisto pointing out that more is better, tempting you into paying up. Sticking with ten is fine for those who just want to share amongst the Instagram crowd though.
Social features are also available, allowing you to check out other people's creations. Some of them are pretty cool too, with some great moments of inspiration.
For those who want a hands-off approach to video creation, Magisto covers most of the bases. It’s easy to use and while you might find yourself wishing for more themes, you’ll still enjoy the results that arise from them. It can make a selection of static images that bit more interesting than usual.
