Cloud Critters is one of those games that’s going to drive you insane. It’ll infuriate you many, many times, and yet you’ll still kind of want to beat it. As it’s not level-based, you technically can never beat Cloud Critters, but you’ll enjoy trying and beating your friends' high scores.
One tap has you jumping around the screen while a longer tap invokes a bigger leap. The catch here is that one tap makes you go in one direction, while the other makes you go the other way. You can’t affect direction any other way, meaning you have to plan those jumps very carefully as they solely dictate where you’re going. If you touch a cloud, you die. If you touch a rocket, you die. If you touch a plane, you die. You get the idea.
The beauty to Cloud Critters is its mission based structure. It gives you simple objectives to work towards such as achieving a long jump or collecting a certain amount of coins. Complete a few of these objectives and you gain a new character to change into. It doesn’t change the format of the game but it’s fun having something to aim towards. You’ll soon find yourself wanting to pursue such targets all in the bid to unlock a playable piece of sushi. Yes, sushi.
As you play, you’ll find yourself steadily improving, too. While once just grabbing 5 coins seemed amazing, you’ll soon be racking up combos of many, many coins. Cloud Critters has the right control scheme that means you soon learn from practice. You gradually pick up how subtle taps can change everything and how best to react to a situation. That’s when you know that Cloud Critters has its claws in you. It’s that kind of insidiously compelling thing that works so well.
