While some games aimed at children (even preschool children) can still appeal to adults, Clangers - Playtime Planet is very much one for youngsters and few other people. While it might offer some colorful charm, its games are so simple that you’d have to be new to gaming to appreciate what they offer.
Featuring the quirky Clangers, beloved of British Television of years gone by and also recently rebooted, players can try out five different activities, involving different Clangers. Each is very simple to the point that there’s no actual end game, but they should amuse youngsters.
The game you’re most likely to dive into first is the Skymoo ride. It’s a rudimentary Endless Flyer but without any form of punishment for messing up. Instead, you just swipe up or down to dodge various moons and satellites. It’s all quite innocent but probably quite fun for the very young.
Other games are a little more interesting, such as one where you tap on various areas to create sounds, as well as a third game having you play hide and seek. Another has you swiping constellations to look at how they develop. The final involves you collecting bouncing peas.
Clangers - Playtime Planet is far from taxing but it’s always quite cute. The visuals are appealing and in keeping with the TV show, and a quick moment of experimentation soon teaches you everything you need to know.
However, Clangers - Playtime Planet doesn’t quite have the staying power of something like the Toca Boca series of games. It’s just not quite that clever, instead focusing more on teaching you simple gaming mechanics. Fans of the show won’t care, being easily distracted by the franchise, but it’s something to bear in mind if you’re a parent keen to find an educational yet entertaining title for your children.
