Burnout CRASH! Review

Console gamers will likely recognize the Burnout name from the popular console racing games. Many of these Burnout games have also included some kind of modes focused on mindless vehicular destruction. The latest game in the franchise is Burnout CRASH!, and this one focuses exclusively on causing as much destruction as possible. Several months ago this title was released on consoles as a digital download, and now it is finally available on iOS devices. The game is slightly adjusted to work better on the mobile platform, but the core gameplay mechanics remain almost exactly the same and the glory of garish and wanton destruction isn't diminished in the slightest.

In Burnout CRASH! players take control of one of several vehicles ranging from pickup trucks to sports cars (different vehicles are unlocked as the player achieves more goals). Using this vehicle, the player plows into steady streams of traffic in different intersections that make up each level and create maximum mayhem with explosive "crash breakers." These are explosions that emanate from the car and hurl it in the direction the player swipes on the screen. The car only moves on its own as it initially drives into the intersection; after that it is only moved around by explosions, bumps from other vehicles, and its own crash breaker explosions.

There are several different game types playable on each level meaning this game has considerable replay value. Each mode is distinct and has its own unique strategy. Some modes even include insanely over the top special events like super tornados or giant lobster monsters. Each intersection is unique with its own distinct traffic patterns, buildings, and features.

This game is habit forming, to say the least. Trying to score the highest on each level can be especially entertaining when competing against friends and other players. The almost puzzle-like gameplay of figuring out how best to cause the most destruction is simple, complex, and satisfying in every way. The visuals look great, even when compared to their console counterparts. Players looking for a unique experience or even fans of other Burnout games will love Burnout CRASH!, and even though the price isn't insignificant there is more than enough content to justify the price tag.
