Boom Bugs Review

In the world of insects, spiders sit atop the food chain dining on whatever little bugs are unlucky enough to get caught in their sticky webs. Generally, there is no escape for these unfortunate insects. In Boom Bugs however, vengeance abounds and all the other bugs are teaming up to take out the spiders in a waves of explosive attacks.

In this casual physics puzzler, players take various versions bugs and use them to smash spiders with rocks, blocks, and other physics game staples. These are no ordinary bugs though, and they pack some extraordinary punch. From lady bugs, to bees, to snails, there are lots of different types of little critters each with their own abilities with which they can take on the spiders. Some of them simply explode, others walk or fly for a distance before exploding, other still create swirling vortexes that suck in everything near them.

Boom Bugs, like most casual games, is split up into many different levels, each with its own layout and several spiders to squash. In each level the player is given a certain mix of bugs to employ against the spiders and they must place them around the level in order squash the eight-legged monsters. There is even a unique little feature that helps the players place the bugs in just the right position. While the players move bugs around the level a special magnified view appears in the corner of the screen and shows players exactly where they are placing the bugs, even on the small screen. It's the developer's attention to small details like this that allows players to focus on having fun instead of fighting against the game's mechanics, making this a truly exceptional game.

It would be naive to claim that Boom Bugs isn't derivative as a game, but it's well though out approach to an iOS gaming standard is refreshing and well worth a look. The game is definitely very fun to play and has enough content to keep players busy for a good amount of time.
