Spacetime Studios has another MMORPG in their Legends series, returning somewhat to the stylistic roots of the original Pocket Legends, with the fantasy-based Arcane Legends. Choosing from one of three classes, players then go on quests with other people for loot, glory, and MacGuffins.

It follows the formula that Spacetime’s other games have done, but let’s just get this out of the way immediately: Arcane Legends is the chaser to the bitter shot that was Dark Legends.

Dark Legends wasn’t bad, but it didn’t boast much in the way of actual improvements to the game, especially compared to the leap that Star Legends was. The energy system was a mistake, and is nowhere to be seen in this game. The social game timers and missions weren’t as captivating as they could or should have been, and it all made it very difficult to find other players. Thankfully, the core of the game was the same, so a lot of good elements remained. Arcane Legends keeps this core, ditches much of what Dark Legends did wrong, and adds pets that can help out in battle and be leveled up to be even better. I have a turtle named Guapo. He’s awesome. He does flips and stuff. Why would I want any other pet?

The mission and quest set up is handled extremely well, allowing players to just wander to an area, team up with a few other wayward adventurers, and either party up with them for long-term play or stick together with a group of friends. There are guild and friend list features for those who need the social aspects, but ronin will find their desires satisfied too: there’s almost always a party to join up with.

The cross-platform technology that Spacetime Studios is using is still the top in its class. The ability to play with anyone on any platform, be it Chrome, iOS, or Android, still works extremely well. Very few games can boast half of the equation, with the ability to play with 3 different platforms or to carry data across various devices, but Arcane Legends continues to get it perfect. There are more options for easily logging in, including Facebook Connect for extreme convenience. This will hopefully only stop being novel when it’s available everywhere.

While the game sports some much-needed tweaks that drastically improve the experience, it’s still at its heart, very similar to the rest of the series. And really, considering that this is the fourth entry in two and a half years, major iteration is hard to come by. But mobile MMORPGs are such a rarity still, and the multiplayer still gets right what other games continually fail to do properly. Those turned off by Dark Legends will find a brighter, happier, and better experience with Arcane Legends.
