XD Games announce retro-styled tactical RPG Sword of Convallaria

XD Games has announced its upcoming tactical RPG, Sword of Convallaria, due to launch on mobile devices later this year. With the developers stating Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem as inspirations, this new entry to the genre will have a lot of pedigree to draw from, but also huge expectations to live up to.

Sword of Convallaria is set on the continent of Rodinia. In the small nation of Iria, rich in the magical Luxite mineral, you awaken in a dungeon. After a daring escape, you reach Convallaria, a town that finds itself under threat from Iria’s escalating conflicts. Being recruited as the leader of the titular Mercenary Group, it is your job to seek peace for the nation. As you pursue this noble goal, you will have full control of your own mercenary group, being able to recruit companions, level them up, research technology, and navigate your way through the different factions as you take on missions for each of them. After you set up your squad, you will need to master the terrain of each battleground to achieve victory, for the destiny of Rodinia.

Watching the trailer, it is clear to see the influence the old classics have had on development, particularly in the graphics. With modern titles such as Fire Emblem: Three Houses taking on a more polished look, it is quite nice to see the classic style is still around. Nostalgia is powerful, and this pixel art has always suited these tactical games.

If you need any more proof of this game's potential, Convvallaria was spotlighted by Yasumi Matsuno, director of Ogre Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics, in an interview recently with developer Lei Guo. In this, he touched on the 300 maps, 1,000 stages and multiple endings players can unlock.
