Since moving to Switch, the Pokemon games have been floundering for me. Others might disagree, as it is their right, but I started looking elsewhere. One of the so-called clones that gripped me was Coromon; I found it quite fun. It seems I wasn't the only one, as it's had enough success to spawn a spin-off: Coromon: Rogue Planet.

Right off the bat, it has to be noted that Rogue Planet makes it sound like you are going to be loading up on guns and exploring a strange place. Alas no. As announced during Monster Taming Direct, we are being promised a fresh twist to the monster-taming formula, complete with an endlessly replayable adventure. Let’s see about that. You will be plonked in the rugged wilderness of Velua and will find yourself contending with procedurally generated maps. These will offer encounters, rewards, and some fearsome Crimsonite bosses to take on in the classic turn-based combat, but with a roguelike twist punctuating the air.

These maps will be pieced together from ten different biomes that offer their own unique set of challenges. Which tameable new friends out of the pool of over 130 Coromon you encounter also depends on these environments, each with its own elemental affinities, personality traits, and skills to mix and match and stick together for that perfect team.

Something quite interesting is that you will need to pick from seven playable characters. Each of these has unique styles, playstyles, and abilities, which will add some more depth to battles. By completing these stories you will unlock certain gameplay bonuses, which is a pretty good incentive to replay more.

One final piece of fascinating news is Rogue Planet will feature a global narrative. As you play and unlock secrets you will be contributing to everyone's story. All players will be revealing new parts of the lore and shedding light on the universe, and I think that's quite a lovely idea.

Coromon: Rogue Planet will be coming to mobile when it launches, but as for when that is, we have the broadside of a barn answer of 2025. Let's hope sooner rather than later.
