If you're looking to get a little roleplaying into your mobile experience, it can be a little bit on the daunting side. After all, the App Store is chock full with games that wear the RPG moniker with pride.

There are different genres and styles to consider, too. Do you want to go premium or free to play? Retro or modern? A port of a classic or something with a little more mobile pedigree behind it? You've got so many options to consider that inactivity is probably the easiest course of action.

So we thought we'd write you a lis to save you from the paralysing nature of an almost infinite choice. With that in mind then, here are some of the best RPGs for mobile, sure to give you your fill of quests, gear, and monsters.

Crashlands - download for iPhone

By far one of the best rpg experiences for mobile, Crashlands also has the virtue of being fully free to play. This expansive game is clearly a labor of love from Butterscotch Shenanigans, and remains one of the dev's best works.

Craft, quest, and slay your way through odd and squishy worlds, upgrading your armor and creating ever more powerful weapons. There's a touch of absurdity mixed with tongue-in-cheek humor here that makes for an entertaining and engaging game that never feels too grindy.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - download for iOS

One of the older RPGs on this list, but it still remains one of the best, and it's also surprisingly well-suited to mobile. While the graphics might feel a little dated, even on the small screen, the storyline continues to impress even now.

Decide whether you'll uphold the tenets of the Jedi Order, or fall to the dark side and align with the Sith masters. In either case, lightsabers are always fun. This is almost certainly the best Star Wars game on mobile, so if you haven't played it yet, kindly rectify that fact.

The Bard's Tale - download for iOS

This one is another older game, but also another one that holds up incredibly well. Take on the unexpected role of a much-maligned bard, and get ready for an extensive adventure that will keep you busy for around twenty hours, if not longer.

The android version includes all three parts of the original game trilogy, so do make sure you have some space available on your phone (and some serious time to dedicate to finishing everything the game has to offer). This humorous adventure offers a wealth of goodies to sate your rpg appetite, and even includes voice acting from Princess Bride star Cary Elwes.

Cat Quest - download for iOS

A game that combines two of the best things into one game, rpg elements and cats. An open-world rpg, Cat Quest lets you roam that world as you please, discovering new areas and taking on new quests as you come across them.

The game has a slightly more laid-back feel to it than some of the other titles on this list, making it a perfect option to pick up and play in short bursts. You'll never feel rushed, and you'll most definitely encounter an entire world of cat-related puns.

Evoland - download for iOS

A love letter to various games of old, that combines familiar elements with callbacks to classic games that we know and love. As you progress through the game you'll also progress through different kinds of rpgs, from 2d pixel art to 3d adventure.

As with the other games on our list, there's plenty to explore here, and if you can't quite get enough, Evoland 2 recently came out, so there's a whole sequel for you to explore when you're done.
