The holidays are upon us, and while it's nice to see people you've not been in contact for a while, sometimes the sheer amount of mingling can take its toll. At times like that you're going to want a game you can really sink some time into away from all the small talk and awkward questions.

That's why we've written this short list of what we think are the best single player experiences that you're really going to be able to put some time into over the holiday period. Don't blame us if you get shouted at for ignoring people though, but do let us know if you've got your own suggestions in the comments at the bottom of the article.

Grimvalor

- download for iOS

A superb mix of a metroidvania and a Souls game that's going to have you hooked within seconds. It plays brilliantly on mobile, and there's so much going on here that every time you jump in you're going to see something amazing. It's challenging too, so you're going to want to take your time with this one.

Morphite

- download for iOS

This one is a game that basically gives you all of space to explore. Okay, it might not do that, but it takes some of the ideas of No Man's Sky, makes them work, and then slots them neatly into a mobile-shaped package. Explore, discover, fight, and more. Is there anywhere better to spend time alone than in the vastness of the cosmos?

Holedown

- download for iOS

Where the other games on this list are big and expansive, Holedown offers a tight arcade experience that's every bit as addictive as everything the others offer. Bounce balls around to smash blocks and earn gems. Once you start playing this it's unlikely you're going to put it down for a good few hours.
