The best new games we played this week

Posted by Jessica Famularo on February 25th, 2017

Ah, here we are again at the close of another busy week. Don't rest too easy, though. We had a lot of great new releases in mobile games this week, and now you're going to have to spend all weekend playing them. That shouldn't be too much of a chore, considering there were quite a few top notch titles debuting on the App Store this week. Here are our favorites.

Gravity Galaxy

Gravity Galaxy offers up a healthy dose of clever puzzles that will leave you scratching your head, though you'll feel like a real smarty pants when you do figure things out. As an intrepid space explorer, your goal is to guide your ship from one end of the galaxy to the next, all while using the heavy gravitational pull of the planets and other space objects you come across to propel you in the right direction. It takes some getting used to, but it's a refreshing challenge in a sea of sameness.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

The first big gamebook release since Sorcery! Part 4, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is the latest fantasy adventure from Tin Man Games. Our own reviews editor, Campbell, quite liked it, and, really, if you can't trust him, who can you trust? In this fantasy adventure, you must journey to the peak of the eponymous mountain to defeat the evil warlock that dwells there. While there's nothing especially groundbreaking about that plot, the active, dice-rolley combat and quality writing make this a fun way to throw away a couple of hours.

Dungeon Rushers

This port of the Steam game translates quite well to mobile devices. It's a colorful strategy RPG that doesn't take itself too seriously. There's plenty to explore, and plenty of loot to uncover. If you tire of the typical dungeon crawling, you can face off against others in the Arena Mode or create your own custom maps to share.

Wobblers

There are plenty of arcade games on the App Store, though few manage to do it right. Wobblers is one of those exceptional games. This bright, cutesie high score chaser is smart and challenging. You propel adorable grinning blobs through space in a desperate attempt to collect as many coins as possible. It's easier said than done though, as the Wobblers live up to their name, easily rolling off your paddle and into the abyss if you're not paying attention to the game's physics.

MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL

It's name may be inscrutable, but we assure you that this odd Pong-inspired number is well worth your time. The gist is simple -- keep a ball bouncing back and forth between two paddles. However, you also happen to be playing Pong under the sea. As a limitless number of underwater critters rise to the surface, it's your job to hit them with your ball to take them out. Beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds really immerse you in the game's nautical setting as well.
