Sleep can often be a tricky, elusive beast. Falling asleep isn’t easy for everyone, and many others find themselves hitting the snooze button repeatedly. As we head away from the sun into the darker, colder months, this becomes an even bigger problem.

Of course, to function as a human in society you will need to get enough rest and wake up in time to make it your job, or school, or whatever obligation you might have no matter the time of year. We pulled together a list of great apps to help improve the quality of your sleep while making sure you wake up bright-eyed each day.

Sleep Cycle - Sleep Tracker

+ Universal & Apple Watch App - Designed for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
Released: 2009-07-23 :: Category: Game

FREE!

Our personal favorite, Sleep Cycle helps you get the best sleep possible and helps you wake up feeling refreshed rather than groggy and miserable. It’s a sleep tracker app that follows your REM cycles using your device’s motion sensor. When you wake up in the morning, graphs and data tell you how you’re doing.

The best part is the alarm clock. Sleep Cycle gently wakes you when you’re closest to consciousness, rather than jolting you out of deep sleep, meaning you won’t have to wake up feeling exhausted. You set an alarm, and the app wakes you up within a 30 minute window of that time depending on your cycle. You can also customize the window for your own needs, extending it or shortening it if need be.

SleepBot - Smart Cycle Alarm with Motion & Sound Tracker

iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad
Released: 2013-05-15 :: Category: Game

FREE!

SleepBot is another sleep tracker, keeping tabs on your movements and sounds throughout the night to gauge your sleep quality.It gives advice on how to fall asleep or stay awake via a series of action lists. The botalso features an ambient noise option, so you can lull yourself to sleep more easily.

Sleep Pillow White Noise Sound

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Released: 2010-12-20 :: Category: Game

$2.99

This app is essentially a lullaby DJ. It comes packaged with a series of ambient sounds, including sounds of trains clacking down the tracks or the wind rustling through trees. All of the tracks are professionally mixed to draw the listener into a steady REM sleep pattern, or, if you fancy, you can make your own mixes or create a favorites list. Sleep Pillow also serves as an alarm clock, using those same sounds to gradually fade in and slowly draw you into waking.

White Noise Lite

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Released: 2008-10-16 :: Category: Game

FREE!

Like Sleep Pillow, White Noise boasts a wide portfolio of relaxing sounds, helping you to fall asleep and keeping you in dreamland until it’s time to wake up. You can make your own playlists, and keep the sounds running overnight in the background as you sleep to assure you’re not startled awake by sudden noises.

Nightstand Central Alarm Clock

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Released: 2010-09-28 :: Category: Game

FREE!

Nightstand Central was designed to do it all. It has an alarm clock that will gradually wake you up, either with your own music or the sounds included in app. You can set different alarm songs for each day of the week if you’d like variety. If you wake up at night to use the bathroom or get a drink, shaking your phone will trigger the flashlight, which you can then shake to turn off when you’re ready. Once you turn your alarm off in the morning, you’re automatically given the weather for the day, too.

How well you sleep, and even how well you wake up, has a huge impact on your energy for the rest of the day. These apps aid that, and in turn could improve your quality of life.
