Koei Tecmo has taken a leaf out of the Square Enix mobile playbook and announced the rather abrupt termination of the global version of Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. On the plus side, we don’t have to ever worry about missing part of that massive title again.

This is particularly noteworthy for two reasons. To begin with, it was only around in a global capacity for just over a year. Literally, its birthday was last week, what a gift. Secondly, it is a shame personally, because I have particularly fond memories of playing Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny on the PS2 as a child. It's a shame to see part of the series die so fast.

Specifically, Atelier Wordcount Padder Global will cease functioning on March 28th. In-game purchases have already ceased, although I have a sneaking suspicion they weren’t doing so well before. Theofficial notice says it is because they are unable to “continue these pursuits at a satisfactory standard for our players.” If you believe that then I have some magic beans for sale.

Perhaps we can find a silver lining here. The Atelier series has been going on for a long time, and it has never had gacha mechanics. I am talking nearly 30 entries of RPG and Alchemy titles. Clearly, this wordy entry was motivated by money, and that is just crass. It’s just companies trying to weaponise the fandom.

I have nothing against gachas in general, I absolutely adore Wuthering Waves in particular, but that is because it was designed as one. Not just shoehorned in from an existing series. If a series as big as Final Fantasy failed with Dissidia Opera Omnia, you know you need something special to succeed. The point is, go play Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny.
