[Is Divide By Sheep actually fun, or is it a bit dull? Take a look at our review to find out.]

Who would have thought splitting up sheep could be so involved? Anyone who’s played Divide by Sheep, that’s who! While we’re not about to give you complete solutions to everything (because that’s just cheating), we will happily give you some primers on how to get started and what to expect.

The Basics

  • If there aren’t enough places for your sheep to land, they’re going to drop into the ocean (and presumably drown - oops). Sometimes, that’s useful, other times, not so much. Plan accordingly.
  • You can combine groups of sheep together before taking them to the transport, or you can opt to ‘top up’ the ship as you go along. Different methods work in different situations, such as when the last platform has limited room.
  • You don’t actually have to gain all three stars in a level to progress. Sure, it’s better that way (and unlocks new areas) but it’s not essential. If you’re really stuck, focus on getting one or two sets of creatures to safety so you can get to the next stage. Remember to go back though, as more stars are generally better.
  • Sometimes the direct route isn’t always better. Certain stages require a lot of backtracking in order to get to the right number of sheep. At times, Divide by Sheep is almost like a sliding block puzzle in this respect.

Obstacles

  • Net barriers are your first real challenge in Divide by Sheep. They restrict where you can go, often requiring you to take a longer route to get somewhere. On their own they’re not a problem, but they often push you towards platforms with limited space, meaning you’ll lose some sheep along the way.
  • Wolves eat sheep, as you’d expect. Fortunately they get tired after eating one sheep each, meaning they just sit there taking up a space on a platform. That means you have to plan to lose a sheep every now and then, as well as lose out on a precious space on an island. They also have their own uses, with some stages requiring you to save wolves as well as sheep. Keep them separate though - because, you know, they don’t mix. At all.
  • Lasers are the start of Divide by Sheep turning very dark indeed. These chop your sheep in half but it’s ok because you can patch them back together again when they’re on the boat. Nasty, huh? Still, you need to plan for this as halved sheep take up twice as much room on platforms, which is a bit annoying really.
  • Trampolines fling your sheep around, dividing them up so that half of a group goes one way, while the other half goes the other. Experimentation is key here and you’ll soon learn that the trampolines are incredibly useful - sometimes rather frustrating, too.
  • Eventually you’ll come across the Dark World. Here, you’re killing off sheep to keep the Grim Reaper happy. It’s as dark as it sounds. Expect to lose a little of your soul while you play.
