Miniclip has announced that their enduringly popular game, 8 Ball Pool, has earned itself a Guinness World Record for the Most Downloaded Mobile Pool Game. It's an incredibly specific award - as they often are - but once you've seen the download numbers, it certainly seems justified.
Since it first launched in 2013, the game has been downloaded a staggering 796,721,888 times. It enjoys 260 million hours of playtime each time, which is apparently the equivalent of potting 4000 balls every second.
Of course, the game had established a healthy player base before arriving on mobile, which has undoubtedly contributed to its ongoing success. The game was first released on Miniclip's website in 2010 and brought 20 million monthly visits. So, 8 Ball Pool releasing for iOS and Android simply allowed players to enjoy the game on the go easier.
To commemorate the award, Miniclip will host a High Score event in the game that will run from today until 29th August. It will include a season pass, themed events and new cues for players to unlock. On top of that, from 19th to 29th August, players will be tasked with sending as many gifts as possible in a bid to break the previous record in a similar period, which stands at 2.5 billion. If this is achieved, players can look forward to an exclusive cue.
Discussing the Guinness World Record, Sérgio Varanda, Chief Creative Officer at Miniclip, said: “Being part of the 8 Ball Pool journey over the years, and being able to positively impact so many players around the world every day with this game, has been really remarkable. 8 Ball Pool has evolved tremendously to what it is today through a combination of determined teams and listening to our base of players and always aiming to put them first."
