3 pioneer journey games like The Trail

Throughout the history of mankind, humans have longed to explore unknown shores until we had every corner of the earth mapped. You can still chase that longing for exploration without moving an inch, though, thanks to fine mobile games like The Trail, which is leading the Games section of the App Store at the moment. It's not the first of it's kind, though. In fact, you'll find many great games that answer the call of frontiers untravelled. Here are three of our favorites.

I mean, The Oregon Trail is the frontier game, and has an obvious influence on The Trail. This mobile version is a worthy remake of MECC's edutainment classic. It has all of the same features to tickle your nostalgia, but this time you can carry the game around in your pocket.

FTL is a frontier-explorer disguised as a roguelike. You command a spaceship travelling through hostile space. There's plenty of multi-layered micromanagement and a whole lot of death involved, but you'll somehow finding yourself coming back again and again.

Organ Trail trades oxen-pulled Conestogas with wagons of the station variety in this off-beat, modern twist on journeys westward. You must travel across the country in a struggle to survive the zombie apocalypse and outbreaks of nasty diseases. Where The Trail is very earnest and upbeat, Organ Trail is dripping with dark humor.

These games are all great starting points if you're looking to set off on a new journey. Whether you want something that takes itself seriously, like The Trail, or games in a similar spirit but with more guts and goofs, there's something for every mood. Happy trails!
