Fallen Londonis a steampunk adventure that's both a visual novel and RPG, and takes you down an expertly written, whimsical, yet cynical, path.

While you’ll spend most of your time reading, Fallen London does require you to make important decisions about your character’s build that will have lasting impact as you progress towards the end of the game.

Luckily for you, we have a few tips on fleshing out your character in preparation for the future so sit back, grab a cup of tea, and read on.

Choose a specialisation that suits you

Upon completing the game’s “tutorial” missions, you’ll be given the opportunity to pick a specialisation that gives you a boost in a certain attribute. These include Dangerous, Persuasive, Shadowy, and Watchful, and all give you advantages in certain starting areas and quests.

Each one also subscribes to a certain theme. For example, Shadowy quests will often involve pickpocketing and spying, while Watchful challenges explore the academic world of Fallen London.

While you’ll later have the opportunity to explore all of these exciting, branching paths, you should choose the one that matches you best starting off.

Pursue a profession

Professions lead to new questlines, rewards, and connections so getting one is a worthwhile pursuit.

When selecting one, it’s a good idea to play to your strengths. For example, if you love Persuasion-heavy quests, you might want to become a Minor Poet.

That being said, you can always change professions to explore all of the content, so don't stress over it.

It’s okay to venture out of your comfort zone

Fallen London does reward balance, too, so while it’s a great idea to focus on one area, don’t completely abandon other attributes.

Sometimes later quests might require multiple attributes, or special paths that you can’t pursue without a little sneakiness or charisma that you’re more scholarly traits just can’t compete with.

It’s okay to take on risky challenges above your skill level - if you fail, you can’t progress in the story, but you do level up much more quickly.

If you keep this advice in mind, you’re well on your way to building a well-balanced character ready to take on whatever the shady streets of Fallen London has in store for them.
