EV.IO Apple exclusive mobile games don’t make a lick of sense
What are we, chopped liver?!
If you are a gamer on phones, no doubt you have been as distressed as I am on one huge sticking point: exclusivity. For years, Xbox and PlayStation have done battle, and before this was the Sega Genesis and the Nintendo NES. On console, it makes sense, but with phones, it is ridiculous.
I am, of course, speaking of the fact that those players in the Apple orchards get all the good stuff, whilst we lowly Android wielders get screwed. Pick up an iPhone and you can enjoy the likes of Resident Evil 4, Warframe, or a vast swathe of titles on the Apple Arcade, which recently added Neo Cab and NFL Retro Bowl 26.
That leaves us with three choices. We can all switch to Apple and choose from a much slimmer, much more expensive range of phones, or we can stick with our Androids and just miss out. Option three is what I did: get both. Which is frankly ridiculous.
I picked up an old iPhone 13 Pro from Back Market so I could do my job better, and for the most part, it just sits on my desk unused. You might think, ok, but I own a PS5 and an Xbox X for exclusives, and I favour one of them. Valid point, but that's a console; it has one job.
A phone is a multipurpose lifeline nowadays. For Android users, you’d need to pay nearly $1,000 on a newer iPhone to play all the games, whilst knowing you will never use the camera, internet, or the literal phone features.
The worst part is just, why? When I was at TennoCon, I spoke to their mobile development team. They said the reason Warframe was only on Apple at the moment was that it is easier to optimize for. A small selection of devices vs thousands of Androids. But then, look at all the apps already across devices.
Destiny: Rising did it. Pokémon GO did it. Wuthering Waves, Crystal of Atlan, PUBG Mobile. The list of developers who did it dwarfs those who don’t. Small studios launch on both, so it can’t be a major resource issue. This exclusivity only hurts us players.
We can let it go for consoles, but for mobile, it just makes no sense at all.
