Fudget Review

Wondering where that salary is going each month? Want to budget money better? Looking for a way to keep track of incomings and outgoings in a quick, straight-forward manner? Well, Fudget might be the solution.

Taking cues from the interfaces of popular productivity apps such Clear, Fudget is presented in a bold and minimalist way due to its use of flat colors throughout. Data is divided into columns, with the first screen typically used for categorizing - whether it's by month, week, day, etc - and the second screen used for adding income and expenses. To edit category columns users must swipe the column to the left, then select the pencil to edit the text or simply tap either the number or text entry on the log page. Users can then reorder them by holding and dragging.

Another handy feature is the ability to star an individual logs, which allows Fudget to automatically enter it in each subsequent category from that point onwards. For example, if users star their expense for rent or for a phone bill, it will automatically appear in every other month they track. It definitely saves time in the long run.

A couple of other features might have been nice though, such as a calculator, some interchangeable color schemes, or maybe even a visual reference of expenses such as a graph or pie chart. The last one would be especially useful in order to compare months and recognize patterns in spending (and most importantly, over-spending). The basic design is obviously a conscious choice, but having to exit the app for a calculator and go back in again could have been avoided with a small addition.

Nevertheless, Fudget is an ideal app for anyone who wants to keep track of their expenditure in a concise, simple and efficient manner, free from the clutter of other budgeting apps. Some might find it too simplistic, but some will undoubtedly appreciate the no-nonsense budget tracking on offer here.
