If there is one thing that is never lacking in the iOS gaming atmosphere it is games derived from other, more popular and successful games. The relative ease of developing on the mobile platforms when compared to other platforms combined with the ubiquity of free to play apps makes this opportunistic type of development more commonplace all the time. Sometimes these games are genuinely great games and it isn't always fair to discount a game just because it borrows mechanics or gameplay from another title. This iteration on gameplay is one of the great strengths of the gaming industry. League Of Extraordinary Birds HD, however falls into a different camp; a camp comprised of games that offer very little that players haven't already seen in other titles and amount to a quick grab for cash via in-app purchases.
League Of Extraordinary Birds HD is another game in the well tread genre of action, go-the-distance games where players move characters through randomly generated environments in an effort to avoid obstacles for as long as possible and chalk up the most distance. The one interesting thing this game does is to use a flapping mechanic by which players propel their bird upwards flap by flap or allow them to descend by not flapping. From there, the rest is text book for the genre. There are items to collect, toxic clouds and enemies to avoid, and random power-ups to grant special powers.
The game's visuals are fairly unique, but still have a familiar feel. They look great and they bring some much needed interest. Thankfully the controls work well enough that players wont' have to fight against the game. League Of Extraordinary Birds HD boasts tons of items and upgrades but the majority of these are nothing more than cosmetic pallet swaps of in-game assets. Players collect collectables during the game that they can spend on these items. They can also buy large amounts of collectables via in-app purchase to unlock the items faster.
Ultimately, League Of Extraordinary Birds HD doesn't bring much to the table that players are likely to find intriguing. The gameplay is solid enough but it all seems a bit tired. In the end there just isn't much besides a flapping mechanic and some interesting visuals that set this game apart from others in the genre.
